Meanwhile, Dorothy is more than exuberant over Blanche's plans, but must also contend with her mother Sophia, who comes to live with the girls when her retirement home burns down. Dorothy's daughter, Kate, comes to Miami with an announcement: she's engaged to a podiatrist. Dorothy is thrilled, but her happiness quickly dims when she realizes that her ex-husband, Stan, is going to be present. Their marriage of thirty-eight years ended when Stan left Dorothy for a woman half his age. Dorothy promises not to make a scene at the reception for her daughter's sake, which places Rose and Blanche in the roles of peacemakers. Lisa Jane Persky guest-stars as Kate. Having not dated since her husband died, Rose reluctantly agrees to go on a double blind date with Blanche. However, while Blanche's date turns out to be a dud, Rose's date turns into a serious relationship. She is invited to accompany him on a cruise, which would involve sharing a stateroom, something she is not sure she's ready for. Meanwhile, Dorothy and Sophia have a gin rummy marathon. Sophia explains that even though Dorothy is a sore loser, Sophia likes playing cards with her because that is when they have their best conversations. | ||

Blanche's sister Virginia (Sheree North, her first appearance on the show) is visiting; Blanche does not want to see her, claiming that she "always wants something." This is undeniably true this time: Virginia is dying, and has come to ask for one of Blanche's kidneys. In the end, Blanche doesn't need to make the decision after all; her veins aren't suitable for a transplant, and Virginia finds a donor elsewhere. | ||

After an attractive doctor gives Sophia a routine check-up, Dorothy and Blanche are both smitten. He dates Dorothy, but makes a pass at Blanche behind Dorothy's back. When Blanche tries to reveal to Dorothy what kind of man the doctor is, Dorothy refuses to listen, claiming that Blanche is just jealous. It's up to Rose to save their friendship. When Rose attempts to seduce the man to break up the fight, the man reveals the truth and Dorothy overhears it. She reconciles with Blanche. Guest star Peter Hansen. | ||

The household is disrupted when Blanche's unruly 14-year-old grandson visits while his parents go on a second honeymoon. His rebellious ways hide his pained relationship with his parents; it takes a listening ear (and some violence from Sophia) to help the boy grow up. Sophia's old boyfriend from Sicily arrives in town, and the two catch up on old times. Meanwhile, the other girls enter a bowling tournament, and Rose reveals her nasty competitive streak. The stakes soon go up, though, as a trip back to Sicily for Sophia rides on a victory for her and Rose. However, seeing how happy her mother is reminiscing with her old beau about their youth in Sicily, Dorothy's heart softens, and she throws the game by purposely missing a spare that she's always been able to make. | ||

The ladies are robbed while at a Madonna concert. Rose becomes paranoid, buying a guard dog, an alarm system, and even a gun. She eventually becomes so terrified that she cannot sleep at night, even shooting the gun at Blanche and her date when the alarm accidentally goes off. When she is forced to face her fear at a parking garage, Rose discovers that she is quite capable of caring for herself. At the end, the burglars are caught, Dorothy gets her mink stole back, and Blanche realizes that her Mama's jewels were hidden in the freezer all along. | ||

Blanche's young fitness instructor asks her out on a date. She exercises to get herself in "prime condition," but gets a nasty surprise when Dirk reveals why he asked her out - she reminds him of his mother. At the house, Rose's mother visits, but Rose's overprotectiveness causes problems and strains her mother's visit. Dorothy makes Rose realize that just as when they were teenagers and wanted their mothers to treat them like adults capable of taking care of themselves, their mothers want to be treated the same by their daughters - as capable adults. After a fabulous dinner party featuring Sophia's Sicilian cuisine, she has severe chest pain and thinks she is having a heart attack. She becomes convinced that she will die, and Dorothy must face her fear of becoming an orphan. Rose tells the story of how her Charlie died. Paramedics aren't able to make it to their home because of a heavy tropical storm, but Sophia's doctor eventually makes it for a home visit, and reveals that her chest pain is from an irritated gall bladder, inflamed by all the rich food she's been eating. | ||

Dorothy's ex-husband, Stan, visits to have some legal documents signed for the sale of a plot of land he and Dorothy bought during their honeymoon. Stan reveals to Dorothy that his wife has left him. Though Rose has been dating Dr. Newman for a month, she is reluctant to introduce the girls to him. After a few passion-filled dates, Dorothy's beau admits that he is married. Though outraged at his deception, Dorothy finds herself still attracted to him. Blanche's favorite niece, Lucy, visits Miami, and immediately goes on date after date, overnight, each time with a different man she has just met. Blanche, Dorothy, and Rose all come down with the flu just days before an awards banquet. They are at each others' throats with their symptoms, but manage to make up. Problems arise again, though, when all are revealed as contenders for the "Best Friend of the Friends of Good Health" Award. They sit through the dinner while exchanging snide comments - but the winner is a surprise to all of them. Due to a lack of funding, the grief-counseling center is closed, forcing Rose to seek employment elsewhere. When many of her old patients come visiting at all hours for help, Dorothy complains that Rose has not done anything to seek a job. Rose's sister Lily comes to visit for the first time since losing her sight. She has always been fiercely independent, but her façade of strength soon falls, and she tearfully begs Rose to move to Chicago to take care of her. The ladies believe that their housekeeper, Marguerite, has magical powers. She is very personable and makes friends with the ladies; the problem is, she is horrible at keeping house and they are forced to fire her. When Rose's great-aunt dies, she must fly to the Bahamas to deliver the eulogy-and speaking in public is her greatest fear! She convinces Blanche and Dorothy to come along, and they end up facing their own fears-Dorothy hates flying, while Blanche suffers from a recurring nightmare of being trapped in a doomed plane full of bald men! At home, Sophia enters an Italian cook-off for the Daughters of Sicily. | ||

Rose volunteers as a Scout Mother to a troop of Sunshine Cadets, but the children's constant talk of nuclear warfare depresses her. She writes a touching letter to Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan, asking them to disarm their bombs. Russian authorities come to Miami and reveal that Gorbachev was touched by the letter, and wants to meet Rose-who they believe is a nine-year-old girl! As the girls deal with this, Sophia tries to devise the perfect act for a talent show.
